You don’t have to look far for guidance and inspiration these days, especially if you’re following the NBA playoffs. That’s because current and former NBA players are sharing their love for wine with fans on social media and even getting involved in the wine industry themselves.

From forming unofficial wine clubs to taking team-building trips to Napa Valley, these players are going all-out to bring excitement and a unique style to modern wine culture. In doing so, they’re showing to newer and younger audiences that not only is this hobby for everyone, but it also doesn’t take much to get started.

The League Leaders in Wine Culture:

Josh Hart – Shooting guard for the Portland Trail Blazers

Josh posts about his favorite wines on his Instagram and he has been actively supportive of the wine industry. He donated $10,000 to aid victims of the Napa Valley wildfires in 2020 and even partnered with the website Wine Access to establish the Diversity in Wine Scholarship program – a unique opportunity for members of underrepresented communities to learn from top industry professionals and earn certification from the Wine & Spirit Education Trust.

Dwyane Wade – Three-time NBA champion with the Miami Heat

Has been vocal about his love for wine. He even formed the brand Wade Cellars in partnership with Pahlmeyer (an iconic family winery in Napa Valley) in 2014. Wade also serves on the Executive Leadership Board for the Department of Viticulture and Enology at the University of California, Davis – the world’s top-ranked research institute in the field.

CJ McCollum – Shooting guard for the New Orleans Pelicans

Is another player who has taken his appreciation for wine to the next level. He has done interviews and talked at length on podcasts about how he went from someone with very limited wine experience to now having his own vineyard. The first wine produced by his Heritage 91 brand sold out in less than an hour when it launched in September 2020.

These are just a few of the players to follow if you want to see how NBA players are broadening their interest in wine collecting and making it easier for newcomers to get started.
